Joseph Edwards [Hoptak Collection] |
From the Miners' Journal, July 9, 1864:
Joseph
Edwards, 1st
Lieutenant of Company I, 48th Reg., P.V.V. who was wounded in three places
before Petersburg on the 17th of June, died in hospital in Washington on the
2nd of July instant, and was buried at Schuylkill Haven on Wednesday last. His
was age was 37 years, 7 months and 7 days, and he leaves a wife and five
children to mourn their loss. He served in the 48th Regiment from the time it
first entered the service, and was in ten engagements. The remains were
attended to the grave by the members of the Middleport Lodge, No. 474, I.O.of
O.F. of which he was a highly respected member; by the Pottsville Cornet Band;
General James Nagle, and other military gentlemen. Rev. Messrs. Klein, Kuntz,
and Swindells conducted the religious services at the grave.
Lieut. Edwards was one of the most
patriotic men in this County. Before his death he said that he was willing to
die in so noble a cause as the one in which he fell. He knew that the rebels
who were the cause of his death would suffer in the future for their crimes.
From the Miners' Journal, July 23, 1864:
Obituary
At a meeting of Middleport Lodge,
No. 474, I.O.O.F., held July 8th, 1864, at Middleport, Pa., the following
preamble and resolutions were adopted.
Whereas, Our later Brother, Joseph
Edwards, was among those who went forth to defend our Government against the
traitors who sought to destroy it; and
Whereas, He fought bravely and
passed through many engagements unharmed, and for his noble was promoted to the
rank of 1st Lieutenant, But God, for some wise design, permitted him to be cut
down during a severe engagement with the enemy in front of Petersburg, Va., and
after lingering in pain and suffering a period of a few weeks, death put an end
to his sufferings. Therefore,
Resolved, That while we bow in
humble submission to the will of God, knowing that whatsoever He doeth is well
done, we cannot do otherwise than deeply mourn the loss of our beloved Brother.
Resolved, That in the death of P.G.
Joseph Edwards this Lodge has lost a valuable member of the fraternity, a true
Brother, and our country a brave and valuable defender.
Resolved, That we truly sympathize
with the widow and family of the deceased in this, their irreparable loss.
Resolved. That a copy of these
resolutions be forwarded to the widow and family of the deceased, and also to
the Miners Journal, for publication.

Jeremiah Willouer - the correct alternative spelling is the original German Willauer was according to his record : Wounded in the "left side and back" on June 3 1864. He was taken to Carver General Hospital, Judiciary Square, Washington DC. He died June 22, 1864 - cause of death was listed as "Pyemia". When he died he possessed $1.34 in specie, a watch, wallet, a pair of trousers and a blanket. They were sent to his wife Elizabeth in Donaldson, Schuylkill County, Pa. His name is misspelled on his headstone, but then having the last name misspelled is 300 year old family tradition.
