"Chapter I. Wounds and Injuries of the Head…trephining for gunshot fracture resulted in recovery. Case. — Private J. W. Jenkins, Co. F, 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers, was wounded at the battle of Antietam, Maryland, September 17th, 1862, by a piece of shell, which caused a punctured fracture of the anterior superior portion of the left parietal bone, and depressed the inner table. He was admitted into Capitol Hospital, Washington, on the 23d, and thence transferred to the De Camp Hospital, David's Island, New York Harbor, on the 28th. On October 3d, Acting Assistant Surgeon William K. Cleveland applied the trephine to the point of fracture, and removed two pieces of the depressed internal table an inch and a quarter in diameter. A few drops of pus escaped. With the exception of a slight headache, there had been no symptoms to denote the presence of pus. Patient made an excellent recovery, and was discharged from the service on December 4th, 1862. The case is reported by Surgeon S. W. Gross, U. S. V. On December 23d, 1869, Pension Examiner D. L. Beeser, reports that the parts are well closed by a firm tissue, and that the patient alleges to suffer neuralgic pains and vertigo at times. His general appearance was good, and he seemed robust and healthy. He rates his disability at one-third. His claim for a pension was pending at the above date." -- The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion. Part I, Volume II: Surgical History by U. S. From the Miners' Journal, July 2, 1864:
Death
of a Soldier.--John
Powell, Corporal of Company F, 48th Regt. P.V.V., who was severely wounded in
the battle of the Wilderness, died in Emory Hospital, Washington, D.C., on the
26th of May, and was buried at Arlington Cemetery, Va., on the 27th of May. The
deceased was a son of William and Mary Powell, of Delaware, near Minersville,
Pa.; was born in South Wales, and came to this country about 13 years ago. At the
breaking out of the Rebellion he enlisted in the 48th Regt., and served under
General Burnside through the North Carolina campaign. He was in a great many
battles and was wounded in the second battle of Bull Run.--Having recovered he
joined his Regiment again, and was in Knoxville when that place was besieged by
Longstreet. He re-enlisted as a veteran at Knoxville, Tenn., January 1864, for
three years. Our departed young friend was not 23 years of age when he died;
was a brave and faithful soldier, and highly respected by all who knew him.
Having heard of his death, his father and mother decided at once to have his
body brought home, if possible, and on the 24th of June it was brought home by
his father and brother. On the 26th a large number of the neighbors assembled
in order to pay the last tribute of respect to the dead soldier, and his
remains were interred with military honors in the cemetery of the Welsh
Congregation Church, Minersville.

Prior to the Battle of Spotsylvania, Sergeant William Wells, also of Company F, remembered that just before the charge across the swampy ground, John Morrisey approached him and bade him goodbye. Asked why he said that, Morrisey replied that "I shall be killed today." "I chided him, and tried to cheer him up," said Wells, "then suggested that he remain out of the fight. . . .He indignantly refused, and said, 'I have never yet shirked my duty, and will not do it now. After I am dead, write to my sister, Mary, and tell her I died facing the enemy.'" Wells remembered that as soon as the assault began he saw Morrisey shot through the forehead and instantly killed. Later, Wells and a few comrades "dug a hole with the bayonet; wrapped [Morrisey] in his blanket and buried him. Then, upon a piece of cracker-box, we wrote, with a charred stick, his name, company and regiment." One year later, Wells was himself wounded outside Petersburg and was taken to a hospital in Chestnut Hill, PA. As a post-script and as a strange coincidence, while there Wells was visited by Mary Morrisey who was presumably a nurse at that hospital. "[F]inding my name among the new arrivals," said Wells, Mary "visited me, and I delivered [her brother's] dying message to her. She was a poor servant girl in the City of Philadelphia," related Wells, "but I shall never forget her distress." [From Gould, Joseph, The Story of the Forty-Eighth]

From the Miners' Journal, July 9, 1864:
Obituary--Straub--Killed
in action on the 17th of June, 1864, in Virginia, Horace F. Straub, of
Minersville, a member of Co. F, 48th Reg. P.V.V.
The following preamble and
resolutions were adopted at a regular meeting of the United Division No. 79 S.
of T., Minersville, held on the evening of July 7, 1864.
Whereas Brother Horace F. Straub has
ever been since his connection with us, a true Son of Temperance, and,
Whereas It is but proper that we
should publicly express our sentiments with regard to our late brother,
therefore,
Resolved, That we have heard with
sincere regret that brother Horace F. Straub was killed in action in Virginia,
on the 17th of June 1864, while gallantly advancing with his comrades upon the
enemy's works.
Resolved, That while we grieve and
lament the untimely death of our late Brother, we console ourselves with the
great thought that he died as became a Son of Temperance and a valiant soldier
of his country, with his face to the foe; that he fell in a holy and noble
cause--the cause of his country and his God.
Resolved, That we feel that we have
indeed lost a friend and Brother and by his death we are again admonished that
life is brief and that whatever our hands find to do for the good of man should
be done quickly for the night cometh wherein no man can work.
Resolved, That we cordially
sympathize with the family and friends of our late Brother in this, their
painful affliction.
Resolved, That a copy of these
resolutions be presented to the mother of our deceased Brother, and that they
be also published in the Miners' Journal.

According to regimental historian Joseph Gould (who also served in Company F), Private Wilson died from "Nostalgia--home sicknesses." As Gould related, Wilson's "was a very sad case." He began to think of home; of what he left behind and what may lie ahead. According to Gould, "His comrades endeavored to divert his mind and thoughts in another channel, but were not successful and he just pined away from a big, strong, healthy boy, and died in less than a month from the time he left home." Company F Casualties
(By Joe Gould)
Mount Carmel Item, 8/14/1916
"A sad part of any war is the casualty
list, without which no real war is possible. The roll of casualties of the
company I which I served in the gallant 48th, was a long one. The
roll of the Co. including the re-enlistment, was 85. Out of this total, 74 were
on the casualty list. Many fine young fellows, of my personal acquaintance,
gave up their lives, others wounded, quite a few contracted disease from which
they never recovered. As I write many of their faces seem to look up to mine
and ask recognition.
My first soldier’s funeral was that
of Bill Brereton, whom we buried at Hatteras, N.C. Then Charley Tresibach, at
Newbern, N.C. Now came the active campaigning, beginning with Bull Run. Harry
Jenkins, Bill Hopkins, and Johnny Morrison were killed there, little Mick
Wilson died from home-sickness. If you ever see any one complaining of home-sickness,
don’t make light of it as it is a real sickness and nothing will give relief,
except home or mother. Pat Brown was killed at Paris, Ky. Dan Fenstermacher
died at Washington, D.C. David Thiel, John Morrissey, Lew Woods, Jno. Powell,
Israel Manning and Andrew Wessner were killed at Spotsylvania. C.H. Doolin and
Harry McCann were killed at the crossing of the Pamunkey river. Edward Pugh
with only a few more weeks to serve, not having re-enlisted, was killed at
Shady Grove. Bill Smith a German, wounded a few days before at Spotsylvania,
but would not go to the rear, was also killed here. Horace F. Straub, a dear
little round-faced boy, only 17, and pretty as a school girl, was killed in our
first engagement at Petersburg. Here also fell Ike Lewis, John Bradley, Dave
McElvie and Simon Devlin.
Wm. Fulton, a brother of Sandy
Fulton, deceased of Shamokin, and Elijah DeFrehn, died in Salisbury, N.C.
prison, having been taken prisoner at the Pegram’s Farm fight. Jacob Wagner
died in Pottsville, Frank Queen and Jim Evans died at Washington; Pete
Litchfield died at Annapolis, Md., of smallpox. Joseph Finley, captured at
Pegram’s Farm, died in Salisbury prison and Wm Kohler died there. John
Haggerty, Mike Kilrain and Pete Quinn, killed at Bull Run. Mike Welsh, another
victim of the cruelty practiced at Salisbury, died there. Tommy Thomas died at
Knoxville, Tenn.
Our company had seven members
captured at Pegram’s Farm, and only two, Bob Paden and Billy Moore returned.
What a list from one company, of
this veteran regiment, every one of them with a mother, mourning for the boy who
never returned."
